Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) I’d always dreamed of visiting Africa, ever since I read my first Tarzan comic as a child. Finally, in 2004, to celebrate my 60th birthday, I went to Tanzania to experience a safari (东非游猎) and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The person who seated next to me on the flight was Tanzania’s Minister of Water and Wildlife Development. We talked for thousands of miles, and he arranged me to visit a school. When I arrived at the school, I was shocked. The dirt floors turned into mud during the rainy season, and the walls couldn’t keep out the heat, cold or bugs (小昆虫). The school was in need of building materials. It broke my heart that these children had to try hard to survive, so I asked the headmaster how much it would cost to feed them. As little as 20 cents per child per day, he told me. Immediately after I got back, I founded (成立) Kids of Kilimanjaro. Since then we’ve grown big enough to provide hot lunches for nearly 13,000 school children in Tanzania every day. The free lunch programme has solved an essential (基本的) problem the children face. I know good education could really make a difference in these children’s lives. My parents always told me the importance of education. I paid my own way through college in Tokyo by teaching English to students and business people. After attending university I moved to San Francisco, when I was 25 years old. In 1978 I realized my American dream when I founded my own company. My success all started with good education. It’s amazing that something as simple as a hot lunch can change so many lives. Giving young people a better, healthier life can encourage them to go all the way through college and lead a change in their country. 1.How old was the writer when he went to Tanzania for the first time? ___________________________________ 2.What made the writer shocked, the poor condition of the school or the poor children?

In early days of history, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another build houses, and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. But today in our cities and suburbs, friendly relationship between neighbors is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents’ time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed the lawns. Today, they cannot hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers, which help dry their clothes. Children are inside watching their favorite TV shows. Is the idea of being a good neighbor old-fashioned? In 1965, a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. In elevators, people played word games and helped cheer each other up.
In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important. 7.Is friendly relationship between neighbors common in our cities and suburbs?

It was just another warm spring afternoon. As usual, I was waiting to pick up my mom at the school parking lot. Suddenly, a ball rolled into the parking lot and stopped in front of me. I looked around and waited for someone to come and collect it, but no one showed up. Just when I was about to pick up the ball, I saw two kids racing towards me. “Pass it to me!” One of them shouted. And so I did. They got the ball, quickly thanked me and then went back along their way. I was curious about where they were from. With plenty of time on my hands, I decided to quietly follow them to their “paradise.” And there it was—in the school playground, a score of children were laughing, chasing balls or making fun of their friends. They were really having a good time!
This reminded me of the carefree days of my childhood. Back then, lunchtime meant home-cooked food that had been lovingly prepared by my mom, not an oily, ready-made lunch from the staff canteen. The final exams were the only thing I had to worry about (in fact, my mom was even more worried about them than I was). The sharing of a new comic was the biggest deal of the month. Praise from my teachers seemed like a lifetime achievement award. Life has just moved on. Almost ten years have passed since my college graduation. Many more people have entered my life, but few of them have created memories as sweet as my school friends had. If I were given the chance to talk to these kids in the playground, I would say, “________.” 13.What was the author doing when the ball rolled into the parking lot? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ . 14.What made the author think of his school days? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ . 15.Who was responsible for the author’s lunch when he was a student? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ . 16.How did the author probably feel whenever he was praised by his teachers? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ . 17.When did the author graduate from college? _______________________________________________________________________________________________ . 18.What do you think the author would have said to the kids if he had been given a chance to do so? Fill in the blank in the last paragraph. Write TWO sentences.

After spending the weekend away with my adult son, I was so impressed by his generous heart that I sent him this letter. Dear son, I want to thank you for teaching me a very valuable lesson in life by the great example you set. When we were eating at that cafe in Bondi and a person who had ordered his hamburger didn’t have enough money to pay for it. Without any hesitation, you went over and put the extra $2 into his hand. When we were leaving, you also threw a five-cent coin onto the road and said something like, “Some kids will really enjoy finding it.” Last week, a young man ahead of me in the line at a petrol (汽油) station didn’t have enough money to pay for his petrol. I asked the money collector, “How much short is he?” She told me he had meant to put $15 petrol in his car but he had been looking at the wrong gauge (计量表) and had put in 15 litres (升) which came to just over $20. This is an easy mistake as both gauges run fast. Something made me think of you and what you did that night at the cafe in Bondi. I handed the young man $6. He was so surprised and said, “But why would you do this for me?” I just smiled as I thought of you. Thank you, son. It’s better to give than to receive. Now when I see a five-cent coin on the ground and want to pick it up, I think of you and leave it there just in case some kids will get excited to find it. Love always,
