It lies at the east of Jianghan Plain, and the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze and Han River. Arising out of the conglomeration of three boroughs, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, Wuhan is known as "the nine provinces" leading thoroughfare"; it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city. The city of Wuhan, first termed as such in 1927, has a population of approximately 9,100,000 people (2006), with about 6,100,000 residents in its urban area. According to the story of zhiyin Yu Boya played for the last time over the grave of his friend Zhong Ziqi, then smashed his lute because the only person able to appreciate his music was dead.[citation needed]
Some luxury riverboat tours begin here after a flight from Beijing or Shanghai, with several days of flatland cruising and then climbing through the Three Gorges with passage upstream past the Gezhouba and Three Gorges dams to the city of Chongqing. With the completion of the dam a number of cruises now start from the upstream side and continue west, with tourists traveling by motor coach from Wuhan.
The Yellow Crane Tower (Huanghelou) is presumed to have been first built in approximately 220 AD. The tower has been destroyed and reconstructed numerous times, was burned last according to some sources in 1884. The tower underwent complete reconstruction in 1981. The reconstruction utilized modern materials and added an elevator, while maintaining the traditional design in the tower"s outward appearance.

My Hometown WuhanThere is a popular folk saying that goes: “In the sky there’s the nine-headed bird; here on earth there are the folk of Hubei”. Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei province. [1]
The Yangtze River and its largest branch the Hanshui divide Wuhan into three parts, namely Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang.[2] The temperature can reach 40 centigrade in summer, and the hot weather lingers for two months. [3]
Wuhan’s hot weather has led to some special customs among local people. In the summer there is no more enjoyable entertainment than swimming. Many swimmers take great delight in swimming across the Yangtze River. [4] From 1956 Mao Zedong swam across it 18 times, and wrote many famous poems.
Like many famous cities have their special food, Wuhan also has a lot. Famous Wuhan snacks include Laotongcheng’s sanxian doupi, Cailinji’s reganmian, Xiaotaoyuan’s soup, Sijimei’s baozi, Wufangzhai’s tangyuan and Xierongde’s mianwo.[5]
Wuhan also has many places of historic interest. On top of Snake Mountain in Wuchang on the south bank, rises the Yello Crane Tower (Huanghelou). Many poets wrote some poems about this Tower. The tower is one of the top three ancient towers of southern China; the others being the Yuyang Tower in Hunan and Tengwangge Tower in Jiangxi.[6]
Nowadays, Wuhan becomes Chinese Silicon Valley. The high technology state in Wuhan is called Optical Valley. [2] It is the country’s largest base and leading R&D base for optical fiber and cable. It is also the largest manufacturing base for IC card and laser equipment.[3]
Wuhan boasts many natural and social advantages, it sits on the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, by the Yangtze and Hanshui rivers, and consists of three thriving towns.[5]
Wuhan is my hometown; I was living in the beautiful city under 3 years old. I want to work at the lovely three towns.[6]
